Curriculum

Through small, well equipped classes and a traditional curriculum our pupils develop confidence and skills to accompany them through life. Creativity in the fields of Art, Drama and Music are an important part of school life. Pupils participate in annual performances and concerts.Past productions have included The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, Toad of Toad Hall and The Railway Children. An unique feature of the school is its Sea Shanty Choir. The choir has performed at different venues in Weymouth, Dorchester and the Festival of the sea in Portsmouth.

Sporting activities at Thornlow include Rugby, Netball, Cross Country, Cricket, Athletics and Swimming. During the summer there are opportunities to go Sailing and we have also launched a new Outdoor Activities Programme in the Winter Months.

Year 3&4 Visit to Fishbourne Roman Villa PDF Print E-mail

On Wednesday 8th May, Years 3&4 travelled to Chichester to explore the Fishbourne Roman Villa.  Firstly, we marvelled at the intricate mosaic floors, using a photo quiz that helped us to focus on the detail of each one. We examined a model showing what The Villa would have looked like in its prime. A video presentation informed us of how The Villa was discovered when a drainage trench was dug in 1960 and what life would have been like for the inhabitants. An inspiring workshop followed, in which, through practical exploration, the children learned about the details of life in roman times, including clothing, cooking, mosaic making, writing, building and armour. The weather was kind to us and we were able to picnic outside at lunchtime. We ended our visit by exploring the museum before visiting the gift shop.  We returned to school with a greatly enhanced understanding of the Roman occupation of Britain.

Glove Puppets PDF Print E-mail

Recently, Reception and Nursery decided on names for the felt glove puppets they had made - Purple Bear, Yellow Bird, Pet Dog, Grandfather and Wolf.  We also wrote a play together and acted it out for Years 1&2.  We also told them all about our "Peter and the Wolf" collage and showed it to them.

In return Years 1&2 showed us their puppets - a pirate and a Ninja turtle - to name but two!  Years 1&2 also entertained us with a wonderful Easter dance they had made up in four beat time to some lovely country style music.  It was a celebration of resurrection - full of life and happiness.

Socks Club PDF Print E-mail

Personal enterprise and initiative is always encouraged at Thornlow.  The Headmaster has recently been astounded by Christopher who has singlehandedly started a new club at school. It is called the Socks Club and numbers the Headmaster amongst its members.

When interviewed Christopher wanted to say "Thanks to everyone who completed my survey, I received some good ideas.  I am currently looking at buying wacky socks wholesale. I also want to design some socks. If any parents can help me with this please let Mrs Clarke know in the school office. I am hoping to have a website up and running by the start of next term. Watch this space. Chris"

For his endeavours in bringing some light hearted amusement and frivolity to the life of the school Chris has been made a Prefect.
