Art and design

Art and Design enables your child to develop and express the power of his or her unique individuality. There is mystery and magic in the creative process.

That is why art work invades our corridors and spreads its influence throughout our school.

We teach children the craft skills necessary for them to express their imagination in visual and tactile form. They learn drawing, design, painting, printing, collage, 3D work and textiles, and enjoy a rich range of visual and physical experiences including visits to outdoor spaces, galleries and artists’ studios.

Children in the Nursery and Reception classes are taught by their class teacher. Pupils in Years 1 – 8 are taught by a specialist art teacher.

Perhaps nothing your child achieves at Thornlow will give you greater cause for amazement than what he or she achieves in the realm of the arts.

Socks Club PDF Print E-mail

Personal enterprise and initiative is always encouraged at Thornlow.  The Headmaster has recently been astounded by Christopher who has singlehandedly started a new club at school. It is called the Socks Club and numbers the Headmaster amongst its members.

When interviewed Christopher wanted to say "Thanks to everyone who completed my survey, I received some good ideas.  I am currently looking at buying wacky socks wholesale. I also want to design some socks. If any parents can help me with this please let Mrs Clarke know in the school office. I am hoping to have a website up and running by the start of next term. Watch this space. Chris"

For his endeavours in bringing some light hearted amusement and frivolity to the life of the school Chris has been made a Prefect.

Our Giant Wall PDF Print E-mail

The Giant Wall is a project that members of "Artwey" ran to locally celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Weymouth and Portland.

As part of the Cultural Olympiad, and having been given the "Inspire Mark", The Giant Wall Project inspired pupils at Thornlow Preparatory School to create their very own textile wall hangings of their local "Giants" or people of significance in their lives.

"If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants" and having seen the finished wall hangings that the pupils of Thornlow produced, they could be defined as inspirational "giants" themselves.

More details about "The Giant Wall" can be found by visiting www.artwey.co.uk.

Project Shalom Craft PDF Print E-mail
In the Autumn Term a lady from "Project Shalom" demonstrated how to make paper beads. Year 3 & 4 pupils were captured by the idea, so this term they set to work forming their own beautiful beads.  Mrs Rose Mayerling then came and led a workshop showing us how to create jewellery using our beads and the correct tools, which she provided.
A wonderful time was had by all.
