Knowing how to prepare and cook food, then wash and dry up afterwards, is a vital life skill which brings great pleasure.

There's a very serious side to it, too. When children learn about food they learn about healthy eating and, above all, how to make healthy choices.

Every child at Thornlow has a one-hour weekly (??) lesson. We like to introduce them to ingredients outside their comfort zone. They learn about hygiene and how to work safely. They write up recipes.

This is a terrifically popular after school activity. The children take home what they have made - and a great many have started cooking at home in their spare time!

Creating Colourful Hand Puppets PDF Print E-mail

Years 1 & 2 recently designed, planned and then created their very own sewn hand puppet.  The children first drew diagrams to plan their puppet, before sewing two pieces of felt together for the body; a variety of stitches, including running stitch, back stitch and blanket stitch were used. Finally, felt was stuck onto the body to create faces and clothes. The children really enjoyed seeing their very own designs come to life, learning along the way that they needed to work within the limitations of materials available and their own personal skills.

The initial designs were first drawn on paper

The paper designs were then turned into hand puppets which the children produced using new skills learnt
