R.E.

Although our ethos at Thornlow is grounded in Christian values and practices, all faiths are warmly welcome here.

Our children learn about the world’s major religions and their influence on culture, lifestyle and history. Out of understanding comes tolerance.

Children are encouraged to think about the nature of faith and make their own sense of the big questions of life.

Parents have the right to withdraw their child from Religious Education but we hope that you will feel entirely comfortable with the way we teach it here.

Taking a Dunking! PDF Print E-mail
The prospect of being dunked completely under water was a fascinating and scary idea which captivated the imagination of the Year 1and 2 class when they explored the theme of baptism.  They wondered how this could relate to their experience of church, a swimming pool and having a bath!  Many of the children remembered how the front of the Weymouth Baptist church looked during "End of Term" services, but now it looked completely different.  Instead of a stage, the floor opened to reveal a small pool.  After watching a video of a baptism taking place in the church and walking through the pool themselves the children gained an unforgettable experience of how members of the Weymouth Baptist church demonstrate their decision to follow Christ.

Synagogue Visit PDF Print E-mail

During the Autumn Term, years 3 and 4 children studied Judaism; this included a visit to the orthodox synagogue in Bournemouth where Reverend Sklan, who visits the school regularly, is a member. He showed the children around the synagogue explaining the significance of various artefacts and gave valuable insights into the Jewish lifestyle. Wonder and awe was evident in every child as they saw and experienced for themselves the special place where Jewish people meet.
