Preparing children for life's horizons

Games

We are very serious about the way we play games. We practise hard so that we can go out there and win. Of course, we can’t win every time, and there are important lessons to be learned from both victory and defeat. Thornlow children are taught to be courteous in victory, gracious and resilient in defeat.

We offer each child the opportunity to try many sports and outdoor activities; we specialise in sailing, swimming and we recently won a provincial rowing competition!

Alongside tennis, swimming, sailing and our outdoor activities programme, Thornlow pupils partake in "Games" every Friday afternoon.  Games played include rugby, football, hockey, rounders and athletics.  We arrange matches against other schools to promote a healthy competitive spirit.

We work in partnership with the "The Marsh Athletics Club" which allows us to utilise their superbly kept large grass football, rugby and hockey pitches, athletic track, changing facilities and equipment.  The Marsh Athletics Playing Fields are only a short walk away from the school.

  • This year has seen a huge improvement in the pupil's sport skills throughout the whole school - and I'm very impressed! Every pupil showed a willingness to try at every task asked of them and every task was always completed with 100% effort.

  • "Sport is funnnnnnnn!" "This Summer at Thornlow we have been doing Athletics and Cricket. At the start of every lesson at Games this summer, we have been doing Athletics (after the warm up). I have learnt how to start correctly in short distance and in long distance I can save my stamina, learning how to get oxygen to my head."
